Workshop: Intro to Protest Clown—A Rebel Clown Army Intensive

Sunday, Nov 16, 2025 @ 10:00 AM EST • Suggested: $90.00

Description

Workshop Summary:

Clowns aren’t just needed at rodeos. They can also greatly aid civic action movements with tactical frivolity that breaks tension, improves morale, and draws attention, raising awareness.

Rebel Clown comes from the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (CIRCA), which in the early 2000s responded to G8 summits, the Iraq war, and more. It is a practice of serious stupidity grounded in connection, complicity, and releasing the inner clown. Armed only with an open heart and a sense of humor, Rebel Clowns are peacekeepers and “NICE Encouragement Officers” who aim to serve and protect while engaged in direct civic action.

Each workshop participant will be initiated into the rebel clown state of being through the alchemy of the smallest mask, the red nose. We’ll also learn how to work together as a “gaggle” – a group that stays together, plays together, and looks out for one another while engaging the public.

After training in studio, we’ll take to the streets on a mission, Operation NICE Maneuvers, in which we’ll practice moving as a gaggle as we offer NICE Encouragement to all those we meet.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s time to send in the clowns!

About Abbey Pleviak:

Abbey has been clowning for over 20 years. In 2007, she attended a Big Shoe Camp Teacher’s Training with the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (CIRCA). Subsequently, she has trained in clown with Giovanni Fusetti (Helikos), Sue Morrison (Clown Through Mask), and Cl’Army (Clown Army, Portland, OR), among others. Abbey was organizer/teacher/show director with the Stumptown Clown Collective (Portland, OR) and has put on many variety shows with clowns. Her favorite thing about teaching clown is facilitating a space for people to experience expressive freedom while being embraced in a loving circle of attention.
