Ever wanted to try stand-up?
Calling all women and gender diverse individuals! Join us for a 6-week dive into the art of standup-comedy! Several professional working comics will help you craft your first tight five-minute standup comedy set within our supportive environment.

Discover your unique style as you learn to turn your own experiences and opinions into a set that will connect with an audience. No prior experience necessary. 

Class concludes with TWO exciting live standup showcase with your fellow classmates! These will be open to your friends, family, and the general public.

About the Instructors
Every class period, students will learn from and receive feedback from a professional standup comedian. The comics will connect with the class either in-person, or via video chat. 

Deanna Ortiz
Voted Best Standup in The Chicago Reader’s 3 years in a row, and named one of Time Out’s Comics To Watch in 2025, Deanna Ortiz is the host of the podcast ‘Crushes!’ And ‘Crime For Bed’ on Hatch+. In 2026 her first special ‘I’m Being Nice’ was released on Amazon Prime, and her debut solo show ‘Funny Slut’ was chosen as a Steppenwolf 2026 Lookout selection. She has worked as a contributing writer for NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, and has been featured in Vulture, WGN News, FOX Good Day Chicago, Taskmaster LIVE and TimeOut Chicago.

About the Facilitator
Patricia Mullins
Patricia Mullins is a longtime theater professional who also trained in sketch comedy and improv at the competitive Second City conservatory, UCB, Magnet Theatre, and Improv Cincinnati. She is an actor, director, and teacher with 15 years of performing experience. She is the Education Director of Lex Comedy Co.

Attendance: Students may miss only two classes to take part in the final student showcase and to move on to Level 2. To be counted present, students must be present for at least 75% of a class period.
