Learn the basics of writing sketch comedy through a variety of in-class exercises, solo writing assignments, and collaborative group work. This course is our introduction to the basics of comedy writing. Students build skills their skills in creating characters, generating ideas for scenes, and honing those ideas so that they have a clear comedic game.
The course will be held at
Fallout Theater, located at 616 Lavaca St in downtown Austin, and will consist of
8 weekly classes on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Students who complete Sketch 101 are eligible to enroll in Sketch 201.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
Mimi Meier is a comedian, singer, actor, and songwriter. Originally from Pittsburgh, Mimi packed her Easy Bake oven and moved to Austin, Texas, where she currently performs standup, sketch comedy with her sketch group “Sundae Scaries”, and writes live stage productions such as her two women show “How to Drive Yourself Crazy” written by her and her co writer Holly Hart. Mimi’s comedy has been featured on the Moontower Comedy Festival, Austin Sketchfest, DC Sketchfest, and will be featured in San Francisco Sketchfest 2025. Her comedy is sharp and fun with a pinch of darkness. She also wears glasses to match her quick wit and to make you think she knows how to read. Mimi will have you laughing, reminiscing, and wondering if you are aroused or upset.
