Learn the basics of writing sketch comedy through a variety of in-class exercises, solo writing assignments, and collaborative group work. This course is our introduction to the basics of comedy writing. Students build skills their skills in creating characters, generating ideas for scenes, and honing those ideas so that they have a clear comedic game.

The course will be held at Fallout Theater, located at 616 Lavaca St in downtown Austin, and will consist of 8 weekly classes on Wednesdays from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Students who complete Sketch 101 are eligible to enroll in Sketch 201.
ABOUT THE TEACHER
Amy Knop (she/her) is a comedy teacher, director, and writer based in Austin and originally from Philadelphia (go birds). She's known for her work directing award-winning improv and sketch main stages such as "The Rose", "It's Britney, Bitch", and "My Own Worst Enemy", garnering recognition from B. Iden Payne Awards and Austin Chronicle's "Best Of". A prolific showrunner in Austin since 2016, Amy has performed in and co-produced Fallout Theater's weekly Saturday night shows Sweet Lightning, Pioneers, and now Come@Me (improv inspired by audience instagrams) since 2019, and served as managing director of Austin Sketch Fest through 2024. She is excited to welcome you into Austin's comedy community!
