Beyond Song Structure

Sunday, Nov 8, 2026 @ 3:00 PM EST • $35.00 (includes fees)

Description
Come learn how to create songs whose form follows the feel of the moment instead of a structure. When we start learning to improvise songs, structures give us a map and a common language, but they’re not the only way to know where you are. More important than structure is feeling what the song is inspiring you to do in each moment. By listening to the musicians, our scene partners, and ourselves, we can tap into a group mind and improvise everything about a song, including its shape. There are endless possibilities and nothing to get wrong. In that way, it’s just like improv itself.

You’ll do exercises on things such as listening to a pianist’s offers, making musical offers, changing the context and content of a chorus, playing with the bridge, and using hooks and key phrases. And most importantly, you’ll get to just try creating non-structured songs, with no strings attached and in a fun, supportive environment.

This workshop is for intermediate to advanced musical improvisers. Enrollees should have at least six months of experience (classes, teams, jams, etc.) and feel confident trying new skills.

Hell Yeah! reserves the right to remove students and refund fees at our discretion.
