This course will be held Wednesday evenings March 18th - May 6th 6-9pm. The location is on the East Side of Athens just off the loop and will be emailed to students. There will be a graduation show (date TBD).
Description
This advanced workshop focuses on creating standup from a place that cannot be replicated, emphasizing honesty and telling stories and jokes that resonate with not only the audience but also the comic. We will draw on our lived experience to create performances that stick with the audience long after they've gone.
This is an 8 week workshop generally for those who have taken a level one workshop, or have had some practice performing. Students will write, share, and revise their own original material with the goal of performing a 10 minute set at graduation.
Standup is a writer's sport, meaning students will have to write (in some fashion or another) every week to continually add on and improve their material. It is also a performance art, meaning students will have to deliver this material in order to practice. The class includes exercises to generate content, improve structure, and practice delivery in addition to discussing some of the theoretical frameworks to explain WHY certain jokes work, with examples from professional comics.
This class is taught by Miles Bunch. Miles has been performing standup for 4 years, performing as a featured comedian and headliner at comedy venues in Athens, Atlanta, Macon, Augusta, Nashville, and Dallas. Miles maintains a focus on stand up comedy that involves vulnerability and story-telling.
