Improvisers are actors. They create characters. To be effective, characters must establish points of view, have an emotional life, and relentlessly pursue what they want. Improvisers should have at their disposal not only the tools of improv (say yes, listen, heighten, look for pattern) but also the skills of the actor. In this class, we will explore how to pursue character wants, make private moments public, and tap life experience to drive and heighten emotion in the context of improvised scenes. We will learn how to use the stage dynamically, create environments, and have a relationship to that environment. We will use voice, movement, and stillness to create compelling performances and stage pictures. If you want to build grounded, charged scenes and deepen your connection to the characters you create and to your scene partners, all while delighting the audience, then this class is for you.

John Boaz has been performing, coaching, and teaching improv for eleven years. He trained at Finest City Improv ("FCI"; Core program and Conservatory), has taken dozens of workshops, and has a B.A. in Theater from UCLA. He has taught for FCI (The Harold) and Cornerstone Improv (JTS Brown). He was a founding member of FCI house team Willis, and can be seen performing with Belle Reve (improvised Tennessee Williams) as well as several narrative genre shows and duos (Maxed Out; Your Only Hope; Sight Unseen; Inside the Improv Studio) around San Diego and anywhere else that will have him.
